As with many fields which are being advanced worldwide, Chile is among the first countries in South America to participate in the worldwide rollout of 5G. The 5G network generally operates at frequencies which have known military applications and previously have been unused for mass communication. Early tests in Chile done by Entel and Ericsson have recorded a speed of 25.4 Gb/second at the 28GHz frequency; it is thought that most consumers can expect average speeds of 1 Gb/second. The purported benefits of 5G include improved data speeds, decreased latency, cheaper rates, more efficient energy usage, and a massive increase in device connectivity. At the speeds that 5G could potentially reach, the volume and accuracy of communications between connected devices in particular will dramatically increase. According to Marcus Weldon, corporate CTO of Nokia and president of Bell Labs, “up until now, we’ve designed the networks for people and their needs, and now we’re designing it for things”.
A Swedish telecommunications manufacturing company, Ericsson, has partnered with Entel and Wom in Chile to deploy 5G arrays throughout the country. Installments started in 2018 in some of the larger cities, and are expected to be completed by 2019. While the 5G rollout is expected to be completed rapidly (Ericsson estimates that 40% of the world’s population will have 5G access by 2024), there have been some legal setbacks in Chile. In mid-2018, telecoms regulator Subtel prohibited the use of the 3.5GHz band as it studied it’s potential for 5G usage, and around the same time the supreme court of Chile ordered Entel, Movistar, and Claro to return their parts of the 700MHz band, due to suspicions of unfairness in the bidding process.
According to a concerned minority, studies proving the harmful effects of 5G are being deliberately ignored, and these effects are even part of the reason for the unprecedented speed with which 5G is being implemented. There have been numerous studies documenting the effects of 5G radiation on humans, animals, and plants; these include skin diseases, many varieties of cancer, birth defects and miscarriages, tissue necrosis in plants, arrhythmia, decrease in bacterial resistance, increase in stress hormone production, disruption of normal sleep patterns, and much more. In Gateshead, England, 5G street lamps were installed for a trial run in 2016, and since then residents have reported nosebleeds, insomnia, cancer, frequent miscarriages, stillbirths, and birth defects. When Mark Steele, one of the residents, started publishing evidence that the lamps were 5G arrays (something the council actively denied) and were responsible for the recent illnesses, the council had him jailed and tried to impose a gag order. However, it was forced to release him and pay for court expenses when the council was unable to defend itself against his evidence. It seems that the 5G rollout is happening quickly thanks to extensively pre-planning worldwide, and that no matter what the country, companies are willing to ignore clear evidence in order to implement a service that many will have no choice but to accept.
Another red flag in regards to the introduction of 5G in Chile is that Ericsson, the company who is designing and supplying the 5G towers, has been linked to the Clintons, who most likely illegally influenced legislation for the company’s benefit. Ericsson had been selling communications equipment to the oppressive governments of countries including Sudan, Syria, Iran, and Belarus. In 2009, the US government started threatening Ericsson with sanctions if they continued to sell to these countries. In 2011, Ericsson sponsored a speech that Bill Clinton gave at a Telecom conference, for which he was paid $750,000. Only one week later, telecommunications were removed from the State Department’s sanctions list. It would be very hard to prove a definite link, but of course a link of some kind is undeniable. Ericsson continued to manufacture telecoms equipment, and today is one of the leaders in 5G technology.
